Carrot Sampling – Great Fun with a Bucket and Spade!

At Hobson Farming, we keep a close eye on every carrot field, carefully detailing and monitoring how each crop is developing. That means getting out there every 3-4 weeks to take regular samples from our carrot fields – especially those overwintering under straw – to make sure quality stays consistently high.

Armed with nothing more glamorous than a bucket and spade, a dedicated six‑person team heads into each field, collecting carrots from carefully randomised points across every hectare – so over 4,000 individual carrots today! Every one‑hectare sample is then put through a meticulous quality check, assessing overall condition and a full range of factors including size, weight, fangs, kippers, virus, cavity spot, scab, violet root rot, pest damage and tip rot.

All of this detailed analysis means we can store our carrots for longer while still sending out only the very best to our customers. For our customers this means there is a consistency in the quality of carrots that we supply at any given time in the year – and because higher quality carrots lead to less waste and longer shelf life, it also means better value and fresher produce for the end customer.
