Our diverse range of crops

2,500 hectares of arable farmland at the heart of our heritage

ARABLE FARMING

Stakeholders are central to our operation.

We have 2,500 hectares of rich arable farmland at the heart of our heritage, carefully managed by the team, who are in constant communication, across two prime locations. To the south of York, with our home farms at Crockey Hill and the prestigious Escrick Estate www.escrick.com managed by Terry Gilliland. To the east of Malton, where we contract farm the stunningly beautiful Wintringham and Scampston Estates www.scampston.co.uk managed by James Thackray.

Balanced rotations.
Greater returns.

At Hobson Farming, we strategically rotate premium crops delivering higher yields and exceptional financial returns for landowners, far surpassing conventional cereal-only rotations.

Crops currently include

  • Feed Winter Wheat
  • Malting and Feed Spring and Winter Barley
  • Feed Winter Rye
  • Winter Oilseed Rape
  • Spring Feed Oats
  • Vining Peas
  • Sugar Beet
  • Carrots
  • Potatoes (grown in partnership)
  • Maize (grown in partnership)
  • Turf (grown in partnership)
  • SFI legume fallow options

Our diverse range of cropping not only allows for a wide rotation which enables great arable weed control and lowers disease pressure, but also delivers higher-value harvests that enhance returns for all our stakeholders.

Deeply committed to preserving the land

Our farming heritage has taught us to understand the importance of caring for the land. That’s why protecting soil health and preserving land quality are at the core of everything we do.

We preserve soil structure with timeliness of cultivations and careful harvesting using low ground pressure machinery.  We know that this attention to detail and responsible harvesting pays dividends in the long term.

We’re dedicated to enriching our soils by increasing organic matter (to aid soil health, improve water retention and enhancing drainage) through a carefully devised programme of traceable organic manures sourced from trusted partners across Yorkshire.

At Hobson Farming we place special emphasis on maintaining and upgrading our land drainage systems, understanding that proper water management is essential for robust crop growth and long-term soil vitality and the importance of ploughing and traditional cultivations both to enhance soil structure and to control invasive weeds. Through regular investments in our drainage infrastructure, and soil structure we ensure our fields remain fertile, resilient, and productive—year after year.
